The National Development Council held an event June 7 in Taipei City to reiterate the government’s commitment to promoting Taiwan as a top Asian destination for digital nomads from around the world.

The event was hosted by NDC Minister Liu Chin-ching and involved more than 200 participants from home and abroad. Attendees included officials from the Chiang Mai provincial government in Thailand and Fukuoka City Government in Japan, as well as representatives from the Jeju Center for Creative Economy and Innovation of South Korea and digital nomad groups in Japan, Latvia, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines.

Liu said Taiwan launched a digital nomad visa in January this year that allows eligible foreign remote workers to live and work in the country for up to six months. He added that optimization of the legal framework, implementation of favorable recruitment measures and networking with the global community aim to attract and retain digital nomads and build a startup-friendly environment in Taiwan.

The minister detailed Taiwan’s advantages as a leading digital nomad destination in Asia, mentioning the country’s advanced digital infrastructure, safe society, friendly people and diverse culture, as well as a raft of government measures promoting entrepreneurship and innovative startups.

Liu invited domestic and international startups to take part in an upcoming NDC project that will offer NT$3 million (US$100,000) each to 100 selected startup projects, adding that groups will also be eligible for investment from the National Development Fund for up to NT$100 million. (SFC-E)
